'Tree of Life' makes Academy's VFX list
'The Green Lantern'The Academy's visual effects branch has narrowed the list of contenders to 15 films, and their decision has at least one surprise. Terence Malick's art house release "The Tree of Life" is still in the running, but Warner's Martin Campbell-helmed summer tentpole "Green Lantern" is out of contention."The Tree of Life" has a few meticulously rendered scenes of ancient life, including dinosuars, and the branch had expressed hope that expansion of the vfx bakeoff . Meanwhile, Warner was not pushing hard for "Green Lantern," whichThe 15 pics still in the running are: "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Cowboys & Aliens," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "Hugo," "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "Real Steel," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," "Sucker Punch," "Super 8," "Thor," "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "The Tree of Life" and "X-Men: First Class."The list is determined by the executive committee of the Acad's vfx branch. All members of the committee are required to see all of those pics before they meet again to narrow the list to the 10 pics that will compete in the visual effects bakeoff. Selection shows the Acad branch warming to vfx that are highly art directed, such as "Hugo," "Sherlock Holmes," "Thor" and "X-Men." Among studios, Paramount dominated with seven of the 15, Warner has three, Fox has three (including Searchlight's "Tree of Life) and Disney has two. Excellence in visual effects is strongly correlated with big theatrical grosses, so Par's strength in the category is a sign of the studio's big year. The absence of U and Sony from the competish is a poor sign for both studios. The 10 picks that will compete in the bakeoff will be announced Jan 4. The visual effects bakeoff will be held on Jan. 19 in the Goldwyn Theater at the Acad's BevHills HQ. Acad vfx branch members in attendance will vote that night to choose the five vfx Oscar nominees. Nominations are announced Jan. 24. Contact David S. Cohen at david.cohen@variety.com

"Mussolini's Body," by Fabrizio Laurenti, is "a voyage to the obsession Italians have utilizing their leaders' physiques," states Laurenti.Laurenti's doc adopts Mussolini's corporeal charisma (when Il Duce reaches energy he loved to supply speeches bare-chested) now, as Mussolini fans still flock to his tomb, in amounts thought being between 80,000 and 100,000 yearly.Silvio Berlusconi's manic concentrate on his looks, his hair surgery, plastic surgery and frequent usage of pancake makeup are known particulars -- in addition to his monumental family tomb.Another hot-button Mussolini doc is "The Boss' Smile" by Marco Bechis ("Garage Olimpo"), about Mussolini's charisma and media savvy."I didn't are planning on creating direct links while using present," Bechis mentioned within the Turin presser. Waking bad dreams or nightmares
To achieve an Oscar-worthy script, scribes must fight writer's block, complete plot holes, and solve the thorniest writing puzzles. These four authors wrestled with, and lastly mastered, moments that shown being bad dreams or nightmares:Paul MillsWriter-director of "Beginners" Mills states the breakup between Oliver (Ewan McGregor) and Anna (Melanie Laurent) was probably the most difficult scene to produce because of having less exterior conflict."Their problems (are) every one of these ghosts inside their mind. Very difficult to (write) that without people convinced that they're annoying, narcissistic, self-pitying, everything stuff. It's tough to convey enough while not say a lot of,In . Mills states."I love solutions like when they have been that large blowout argument, you don't hear what they're saying since it doesn't appear it is said. It matters what they're feeling and they're feeling all this fear and many types of these old tales inside their mind," Mills adds. * * * Will Reiser"50/50" scribeReiser states the scene in which the audience first sees Katherine (Anna Kendrick) "really being agreeable at her job" just like a counselor was difficult scene to produce. Though he was constantly taking input from co-producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, and director Jonathan Levine, Reiser hadn't finished the scene until an hour or so approximately just before being shot. For Reiser, the determining line was when Katherine states, "So, she's got a husband who can't consult with her together with a boy who'll not," to Adam (Ernest Gordon-Levitt), about his mother."That line in my opinion, that line completed this puzzle," without one, the second act in the movie wouldn't seem sensible, according to him. * * * John Logan"Coriolanus" adaptorIn adapting Shakespeare's "Coriolanus," Logan's finest challenge was emphasizing the connection between Coriolanus (Take advantage of Fiennes) and also the mother, Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave)."In my opinion most likely probably the most brilliant reasons for your amazing play is always that for that complexity it comes down lower with a mother and boy," states Logan, adding it absolutely was "important and challenging to communicate how insular their relationship is." His hardest scene comes about when Volumnia describes to Coriolanus her political ambitions for him which is briefly interrupted by Coriolanus' wife, Virgilia (Jessica Chastain). It absolutely was Logan's idea to produce that scene within the bathroom, while Volumnia bandages Coriolanus' wounds."That was a means to suggest she's been completely fostering of him, much the same way your mother wrapped your knee round the schoolyard." * * * Christopher Hampton"A Dangerous Method" writerHampton calls "A Dangerous Method," in regards to the connected associations between psychology pioneers Freud and Jung in addition to their patient Sabina Spielrein, most likely probably the most difficult script he's ever written, which is last scene was toughest of.The question was where one can finish the story. "Should you do not have a deathbed scene, where can you lower side within the subject? I used to be really lost for just about any very very long time."Then he discovered Sabina's last letter from Jung, dated 1913, saying she might be passing through Europe. He imagined your final meeting together, when he's near failing and she's retrieved together with a mental health specialist herself. Their situations have remedied. "And that means you have that rather satisfying circle, which in some manner had not happened in my opinion prior to the scene really was written. "You manage a lot on instinct throughout these things. And every so often your instinct appears while using goods."EYE Round The Oscars: The Writer Secrets exact harsh toll Writers' words craft indelible images Vet spice newcomer class Waking bad dreams or nightmares Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com
